Choose a computer to host the master

Hardware requirements

As "master" you can use any computer, even a very old one. If you have an unused old laptop that is laying around you can also use it as "master". A laptop computer requires 3-8 times less energy than a desktop computer. DNA Baser Master requires only few MB of RAM and it takes less than 0.5% of your CPU, so you can also use one of your productivity machines as master. You will  be able to use your machine for other tasks while DNA Baser master is running in background.

 

Minimum system requirements:

• Windows 2000 / 0.1GB RAM / 0.5GHz Intel or AMD CPU / 10Mb network

Network speed

When a client is started it searches the network to discover the master. If your network is slow (10Mbps) or crowded, the client may need few additional seconds to start. To improve the start up speed of your clients please check the 'Improving the start up' section.

Download and install DNA Baser Master package

In order to operate the software you need to download DNA Baser Master package. If you already have DNA Baser Standard (single user) edition installed, replace it with the Network edition. Install the program anywhere you like. A folder such us "C:\DNA Baser Master\" or "C:\Program Files\DNA Baser Master" will be appropriate.

Unlocking the program

In order to use the program you need to enter your unlock key. If you don't have your key yet please follow these steps:

1. Double click the MasterStarter application.
2. Press the "Get ID/Enter key" button. DNA Baser will display an 8-digit string. This is your computer ID. You need to fill this ID in the "Key Request" form received after purchase and send it to us.
3. Soon we will send you your unlock key. Press the "Get ID/Enter key" button again to enter the key!

Note: You need to send only one ID to us: the ID of your master computer. Do NOT send the ID of your client computers!

Running the master

Navigate to the folder were DNA Baser Master is installed. Double click the MasterStarter application. Press the "Start Master" button to start the master. This will start the actual master program. The master program will display a window let you know that it is running. After 100 seconds this window will close itself but the program will continue to run in the background. To stop a running master press the "Stop master" button.

To can create a handy shortcut on your desktop press the Control and Shift keys (simultaneously) while dragging the "MasterStarter.exe" file on your desktop.

Hint for system administrators:

To make DNA Baser to automatically start as master every time your computer starts, you can place a shortcut to "c:\DNA Baser Master\System\StartAsMaster.cmd" file in the StartUp folder (located under the Windows 'Start' button).
